PARALLELS BETWEEN PHYSICAL AND FINE ARTS

THE RED STUDIO-HENRI MATISSE

The arts are an interdisciplinary field, one feeding off the other. The principles of physics and laws of nature apply to all creatures human and otherwise. The rhythmic movement of the planets, the cyclical nature of weather, the famous golden ratio dictating and rendering beauty be it to a human face or a flower. Likewise certain basic principles are common amongst various forms of art. For example , the concepts of Tonal Value, Texture, Space, Composition, Balance , Focal Point are relevant in the fine arts as well as movement arts.

A painting comes to life only when the above principles are followed diligenty, likewise in choreography, set design, colour of costumes, the usage of stage space has to be in harmony. Even if one of the elements is out of sync the whole setup looks awry. Great paintings such as the Red Studio by Henri Matisse, the Night Watch by Paul Gaugin , Rain Steam and Speed by Joseph Turner are classic examples of exemplary artwork that followed the aforementioned principles. Likewise in Choreography, great works like the Swan Lake, Riverdance , or Ramayana and Mahabharata Ballets all follow aesthetics that are pleasing to the eye.
